Superstitious types across the City are today smothering black cats in garlic and Morris-dancing around ladders to avoid falling victim to the curse of Friday 13th. There is an official term for this practice (honestly):
Paraskevidekatriaphobia: n. a morbid, irrational fear of the paranormal effects of Friday 13th.
As the great strength of the English language is its capacity to evolve, however, The Diary would not be at all surprised to see a new definition crop up in next year’s official lexicon:
Paraskevidekatriaphobia: n. 1 a morbid, irrational fear of Friday 13th. 2 a morbid, irrational fear of getting a real job, often associated with a tendency to collect cushy, part-time directorships and pick arguments with Government officials.
