Anyone who stayed up late to watch the most glittering occasion since the 2006 Legal Week Awards will have been surprised at the apparent sleight to the brightest star in Hollywood’s firmament at last night’s Oscars – German legal outfit Noerr Stiefenhofer Lutz.

While yummy grandmummy Helen Mirren used her 60 seconds of mic time to kowtow to the real life Queen she captured so uncannily, attendees from Noerr – Macfarlanes’ Munich mate – were cruelly denied a chance to pay tribute to Angela Merkel, their inspirational senior partner or an ever-supportive family pet.

This despite “basking in the glory” - as their impressively shameless press release puts it - of having advised the production company behind Best Foreign Language Film winner ‘Das Leben der Anderen’ (ask a Freshfields partner if your German is as patchy as The Diary's).

So much for the red carpet treatment.
