Law firm managers looking for ways of keeping their associates from leaving the profession – other than bolting the door and covering the office in a Chernobyl-style concrete sarcophagus – should look no further than their humble tea lady.
Channel Islands royalty Bedell Cristin for many years employed a legendary queen of the cuppa named Audrey, who delivered scores of steaming brews every day to the stressed out funds-junkies of St Helier.
Rumours that Audrey was to be downsized and disposed of were therefore met with consternation from within the firm’s ranks.
“She used to remind me that I had 40 days’ leave left to take before the end of the year,” reminisced one grateful partner – sounding not unlike overseas combatants counting down the days until being shipped back home from the front.
The long-serving Audrey recently retired of her own accord. However, The Diary understands that the younger model brought in to replace her is not proving so popular – she is reportedly scaring some of the younger associates thanks to an unsettling array of tattoos on her décolletage.
