Freshfields is not the only German firm divided by political infighting this week, with Teutonic M&A boutique P+P Pollarth currently wrestling with some weighty internal issues of its own.
While the north-south divide in England is easily explained – you just move the decimal point a couple of places to the left on the payslip for an associate based anywhere north of the Watford Gap – things are more political in Germany.
P+P partners have reportedly become embroiled in a bitter row over the ‘hold’ music the firm’s telephony system inflicts on waiting callers. Apparently the conservative sensibilities of the Munich office have been offended by the progressive, funked-up sounds favoured by the Frankfurt funsters.
“If the Munich partners have it their way in the morning, by the afternoon one of the Frankfurt partners will have switched it to their chosen music,” a well-placed source told The Diary. “It has upset a lot of the partners.”

"Your call will be answered shortly, boyeee!"
