It’s a common misconception that the in-house world is a soft touch compared to the ferocious, cut-throat environment of private practice. Not so, however, if you plan to go rub pinstripes in the elevator with the bankers of Goldman Sachs.
Getting a legal gig at the bulge bracket giant, which is famed for its crack team of in-house advisers, can apparently take as many as 42 – yup, forty-two – interviews.
Mind you, The Diary can relate – there are plenty of City partners out there who take at least that many interviews to come up with a decent quote.
The Diary hears how one unfortunate candidate missed out on interview number one after having the gall to ask the bank for directions to its offices on Fleet Street.
“We don’t need a sign on the door,” was the icy response – so wannabe Goldmen are advised to brush up on their geography pre-interview.
