Media it-boys and occasional lawyers Mark Stephens and Nigel Knowles step into the sequinned stilettos of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie for the latest series of MTV celebreality smash The Simple Life.

Ratings soar thanks to the reclusive duo’s hilarious antics in a variety of ‘real life’ situations, including a memorable scene where Knowles attempts to broker a merger deal with a family of hillbillies from Stockton-on-Tees.

However, critics raise doubts over the authenticity of the fly-on-the-wall, no-quotes-barred documentary, due in part to Stephens’ fondness for 20-minute, direct-to-camera monologues on fame, the meaning of life and what the latest developments in the Mills-McCartney divorce battle mean to the man in the street.
