« Bricking the bank | Diary news focus: those legal Superbrands in full | ‘Most of all, I’d like to thank my lawyer…’ »

Last week market analysts at Superbrands unveiled their latest list of the top 500 names in UK business, with unquestioned flag-bearers for UK plc like Linklaters storming into the top, erm, 260.
Links marched past Clifford Chance to be this year’s top-placed law firm in 259th – a single agonising spot behind ubiquitous outhouse-provider Portakabin and a mere 245 places behind the leading accountancy group, PricewaterhouseCoopers.
CC trailed in 296th, while Eversheds led the nationals in 309th – ahead of City royalty like Slaughter and Mayhem (347), Freshfields Funhouse Deringer (383) and Herbert Smith (454).
It’s certainly no disgrace to finish behind such iconic brands as Sellotape (56) or even the Carlyle Group, which placed 354 despite going out of its way to keep as low a profile as possible.
However, most galling for those firms’ crack marketing squads must surely be the ‘Superbrand’ placed 160th – none other than the Law Society of England & Wales.
Keep up the good work, chaps – your public loves you!
